Phil Johnston

Phil Johnston brings decades of combined executive search and senior-level healthcare and technology industry experience to his client work. He has conducted more than 150 board, CEO and CEO succession assignments for global healthcare and technology companies.

He leads the West Coast Boards Practice and is a human resources functional expert, having successfully completed more than 100 chief human resources officer (CHRO) searches. He also provides executive assessments and advises clients on a range of issues from organizational culture to team effectiveness. Phil previously ran the Southeast Asia business based in Singapore and prior to that, led the Western U.S. business for the firm, including offices in San Francisco, Silicon Valley, Los Angeles and Orange County.

Board and C-level and Human Resources expertise across healthcare and technology

    Earlier in his career, Phil served as the top human resources executive for a number of fast-growing companies in Silicon Valley.
    While serving as vice president for Teknekron, a technology incubator, he served as interim CEO for Teknekron Infoswitch and board member of various portfolio companies, including TIBCO. He began his career with leadership roles at American Hospital Supply Corporation (now Baxter).
    An expert in assessing cross-cultural agility in senior leaders, Phil has published articles on best practices in corporate governance, CEO succession and governance practices in Asia versus the West, and has spoken at numerous conferences.

Phil has served on a number of public, private and nonprofit boards, including Discovery Toys (acquired by Avon) and TIBCO (acquired by Vista Equity Partners). He currently serves as vice chair of Envision Education, a charter school system that enables disadvantaged youth to attend college. Phil attended University of Minnesota, where he received a Bachelor of Arts (magna cum laude) in psychology and a master’s in industrial relations at Carlson School of Management.
